Description

Shih Tzu - Small - Senior - Male - Dog - PeterPan
Description
01-16-09 PeterPan is a 13 lb blonde, DOB 09-07-96. He arrived with his littermate, Wendy as their human went into an assisted living facility. He arrived with his traveling bag, blanket, pillow, complete vet records, a 3 page owner surrender of his likes, dislikes, habits to help himsettle in. Peter has had ongoing eye issues since a pup so needs eye ointment on a daily basis. He has trouble with his vision yet once he learns where his surroundings are those won't be an issue. He is faithful in his use of piddle pads, also does well when taken out on a schedule or has the use of a doggy door. You may copy/paste the following link into your browser to learn more about this breed: http://www.petfinder.com/dog-breeds/Shih-Tzu http://dogbreedinfo.com/shihtzu.htm PeterPan has been placed in foster care with Marti. Her updates on Peter's likes & dislikes will let you know if this fur-fella is suitable for your home. First update from Marti- "All went very well last night, Jackie knocked on door about 8 and Wendy jumped off loveseat and greeted her, I then sat Pete on floor and he greeted her, she liked both of them. At bedtime I put Pete on his blankie and pillow and Wendy on bed with me. Both went to sleep immediately and then about 3 Wendy stood up and looked down so I sat her next to Pete and we all slept well until morning. Wendy has nailed peddle pad and hope Pete will too. Both are much more calm and Wendy is asleep on loveseat and Pete is on his bed. They both like to be petted and have not eaten much, but I know they will later today. They are very quiet and very good. Will let you know when they pick up on eating, I have a feeling they were both used to people food as treats and filled in with their food. Both very nice dogs." Late PM update: "Well both are now eating their dog food. Pete held out until around noon and then he came in and began to eat. Still Wendy held out and stared at me all the way thru lunch and dinner. She then jumped off loveseat and came to my feet, so I bent down to pet her and she turned over and let me give her belly rubs. I then took her out and she now likes the tie out just fine, upon coming back into the house she headed straight to bowl and ate not alot but she ate and they are both now asleep on their blankie and pillow in bedroom. I will take her out at ten or before. I think we have made major steps today.... Great dogs!" 01-20 Pete & Wendy are doing just fine and Wendy is getting friendlier each day. 01-22 Marti & Carol took Pete & Wendy to Linda's Grooming for some touch up work under the nose, tail, paws. "Pete and Wendy went to Linda's at 8:30 this morning and both were done by 9. Both rode nicely and quietly on my lap and Linda did a really nice job. That mess on Wendy under her eye was a little tender and it was shaved off so Linda said to put alittle salve on it. We brought them straight back here and they were both glad to be home......All is well here and Wendy loves to go out on tie out in this kind of weather." 01-25 Pete is quiet and sweet and sleeps most of time,.......He is just having a hard time with this.....Neither one overeat and seem to dislike their food, and beg for people food. I am treating Petes eyes everyday and it is alot easier now that his hair has been cut. 01-26 An early morning phone chat with Marti. PeterPan is having a bit of a challenge. His little blanket gives him security, spends most of his day sleeping on it. He seems rather confused so Marti is keeping his routine as close to the same as possible every day. 01-30 PeterPan has come on-site leaving Wendy with Marti. PeterPan will benefit from a bit of stimulation rather than spend his entire day dozing. BabyCakes is blind, does very well with the pack & we hope in a few days PeterPan will join BabyCakes in exploring the small dog play yard on nice days. PeterPan was given some brief time on the porch, seemed to quickly learn where porch furniture was, also found his blanket. The sunshine has returned so the rays MAY help him chase away his winter blues. Blind dogs DO adapt to their surroundings. We believe PeterPan would be PAWfect for a home with someone that has vision problems, doesn't move furniture about, may even have a bit of cabin fever, appreciates sunshine on warm days during winter months. Peter will be gradually introduced to the rescue pack. BabyCakes may appoint herself as his "Mascot" helping him adjust as she has done so well, gets around beautifully. 01-31 PeterPan has now joined the pack, total freedom of the kitchen/dining area. He spent time on the porch in the sunbeams then came inside, cautiously walking, learning his way about. He has a soft snore so if you miss your snoring mate, he will be PAWfect for you! 02-01 PeterPan will be visiting Doc the first of the week. We want our vet's opinion on the eye meds, see if something else may work better. We also need his teeth checked, possibly have a dental done. Dental hygiene helps the kidneys, thus lungs & heart. Yet, with Peter's age it's always a risk with anesthesia. Doc will make the final decision on how much can be done to keep him happy, healthy. 02-03 PeterPan goes across the porch, into the small dog play yard, sniffs about, does his duty, then makes his way back to the door, sits & waits. Once inside he has found that he prefers lying near the computer desk, waiting for an e-mail to offer him a very special home. Late AM - Allan held PeterPan as Mona drove him for a check-up on his eyes. PeterPan will be on Optimmune twice a day, then switch over to once a day. The ointment stimulates tear production. He has been scheduled for a dental. Late PM - PeterPan's eyes are already a wee bit better. 02-04 Peter Pan seems more comfy with the ointment, not rubbing his eyes like he had been. Taken outside first thing, he makes his way across the porch, to the small dog play yard, does his duty, sniffs about, then makes his way back to the front door, sits patiently for a door person. Once inside he makes his way back to the computer chair, never giving up hope someone with vision problems will come for him, love him until Death they do part. Peter is a lovely house pet. He is not a barker, gets along with the other fur-kids, shows no interest in the resident cat. He LOVES a lap for a car ride. He is really quite low maintenance, just needs eye meds. 02-05 Ointment instead of drops is working much better. His eyes were still moist this AM, not caked with goo. Peter made his way to the front door from the play area after he did his morning duty. He's adapting just like BabyCakes did. Peter is showing that with just a few days to adjust with Marti, now a few days in rescue pack life, he can adapt to any situation. He has quickly learned the routine, out the door, in the door, location of water bowl, food bowl, seems to enjoy exploring the small dog play yard just for that "best" spot to leave his mark/deposit on his little corner of the world. 02-07 Peter has found his voice! He barked! 02-10 It's a lovely day, quite mild temps so PeterPan joined the small dog pack in the play yard, wind blowing through his fur. We do believe he is able to see shadows now that the Rx has cleared up his eyes a bit. Or, like BabyCakes, he has adapted so well & quickly you hardly realize he has a vision problem. He does very well with the other fur-kids, loves being outside, even curled up to take a nap. Once back inside he curled up to finish his nap. Peter does not eat as well as we would like. He was used to "people food" & we don't serve that in rescue. Once he finds a fur-ever home he may find "people food" again & do very well with table tidbits. 02-11 PeterPan barked 3AM, needed to go outside, do his duty. Out he went, did his duty, back inside, back to sleep. Our personal opinion is he is now getting into his old habits, sees shadows, has the companionship of other fur-kids in rescue, has found a reason to live again. It's been a challenge for him, yet with time & patience he is making slow, steady steps of progress. He is scheduled for a dental, not that much tartar yet dental hygiene is important to keep kidneys, heart & lungs functioning properly. 02-12 Peter has been scheduled for a make-over a few days after his dental. He LOVES being outside in the sun, then will lie on the heated dog bed on the porch. When he finally tires of all the fresh air & sunshine he barks at the door to come back inside. He is acting rather frisky with Buddy as they romped in the afternoon in the yard. All the activity seems to be good for him. 02-13 PeterPan & Wendy rode together to Doc for their dental. Doc did notice the improvement with Peter's eyes with the ointment used. In reviewing the medical records closely the DOB is 95 instead of 96. He is one year older. 02-14 Peter is doing nicely following his dental. He barks, wags his tail, evidently feels much better with the eye ointment, now a fresh dental. Peter LOVES being outside. After his morning constitutional he will curl up on the heated dog bed on the porch, take his time about barking to come back inside. His house manners are doing fine if he is taken out on a schedule. We won't tell you he is housebroken as if left home alone, 8 hours a day, at his age, he simply may not be able to hold it that long. If you are home all day, want a devoted companion, he would be PAWfect. 02-16 PeterPan does appear to hear or he must be great at feeling vibrations. He comes to the sound of a loud voice. He has been scheduled for a professional grooming later in the week. 02-19 Peter's hunger strike for people food has ended. He now barks & puts his paws up at the counter where the dry pet food is kept. He should now pick back up any weight he has lost. House pets that have been fed table scraps have a challenge adjusting in rescue to the dry dog food, even if mixed with a bit of canned. It takes as long as it takes for them to adapt, both to the food change & to rescue pack life. Peter is doing very well considering his short time in rescue & the change to his entire world. Taken out on a schedule he has had no accidents. 02-20 PeterPan had his early summer make-over by Linda's Grooming. Taken out on a schedule he is doing really nicely on his house manners. 02-24 PeterPan continues to have really nice house manners when taken out on a schedule. He goes out first thing in the AM, after breakfast, before bedtime. Just a few minutes of walking about & he will do his duty. He wears his little Made in Cole Camp USA jacket made by Mildred to go outside. He will also change into his little blue sweater that he arrived with. Temperatures have become slightly less frigid & he does enjoy some outside time. He barks when he is ready to return in the house. His tail wags, he seems content, adjusted. Rescue life is good yet it cannot compare with a home of his very own. 03-13 PeterPan continues to do well. Most of his day is spent sleeping on a deep, soft pet bed. He does enjoy his early morning walkabout outside with the pack. wearing his little sweater. He enjoys his evening stroll before bedtime. 04-07 PeterPan IS housebroken! He just needs to be taken out first thing in the AM, 3 or 4 times a day, again before bedtime, PAWfect house manners! He will give a little "Woof" in front of the fridge when he wants an extra snack. He gives a little "Woof" at the front door when he wants back in from his walkabout. He is getting mini meals as it seems to work better for him with his age. This is one sweet little fur-man that only needs TLC, a soft pillow, no trouble at all. If he finds his own personal chef to cook for him he may even show a very lively side as meals are prepared. Nothing like a home cooked meal to make the lil guy dance for joy! 04-26 PeterPan is enjoying some gourmet type canned pet food. Mini meals are still being done yet he just wanted something different than the usual. 04-27 PeterPan wins! PeterPan made it quite clear that the gourmet pet food was a bit more tolerable yet he was going to hold out for people food. Not what we prefer yet at his age what does it hurt? We purchased his very own roll of summer sausage from Split Rail Country Market, his little nose twitched with delight. 04-28 PeterPan finally had a full breakfast once again. Not sure how long the summer sausage will keep his taste buds tickling yet this AM he seemed to relish the taste of "people food" instead of gourmet pet food. 05-09 PeterPan has gone into foster care with Tammy & Taylor taking along his eye meds & his brand new package of summer sausage. He was able to enjoy Maifest prior to leaving with Taylor, even joined in the Pet Parade. 05-10 A phone call that PeterPan did fine on the way home with his foster family. Stopping once he immediately watered the grass. He slept with Taylor, is enjoying the holding. He is learning his surroundings, won't climb the stairs to the second story which is wonderful, no baby gate needed. 05-11 A phone call from Taylor. PeterPan spent most of the day playing with the cat. He has had no accidents, slept in her bed, loves to cuddle, just the sweetest thing. They went shopping at Petco, got him some special treats & he is even eating some hard dog food!! 05-14 Please cross your paws for PeterPan. Accidents happen. PeterPan took a nasty fall, appears to have broken his jaw. Tammy & Taylor have rushed him to their vet. Options have been discussed with the vet and with us. We will trust Tammy, Taylor & their vet to make the right decision. When Lil Hans broke his jaw he was a bit younger than PeterPan. One side was plated, one side wired, took 8 weeks for him to recover. The plate was removed, yet the wire remains in place. During his recovery time his food was blended to soup consistency, he lapped it up. Update after vet visit: PeterPan broke his jaw between two teeth. Options were discussed. It's been decided to let PeterPan heal on his own, blended soup to lap up, keep an eye on him for a week. We often get fur-kids into rescue from kennels that have had broken jaws, no vet care received, have done just fine, even eat dry kibble. 05-17 PeterPan is lapping up his blended summer sausage & cheese. He sleeps with Taylor at night. Tammy sits on the rocking chair, holding & rocking him. He is enjoying his injured & pampered status. 05-19 A phone call from foster mom Taylor. PeterPan is doing much, much better. He has been eating sausage gravy, also chewing up sausage patties. He got into the dry cat kibble, ate that too! He rolls around under the covers so his jaw is not causing him obvious pain. We concur with their decision to let nature take its course, not subject him to surgery. Broken jaws often heal on their own & Peter seems to be doing fine just as he is. 06-13 PeterPan is doing very well with Taylor, lots of holding, sleeping in her bed, no accidents at all, PAWfect house manners! He also has his own little dog bed beside her bed. He may start out in his bed, end up in her bed. He is eating moist food, enjoys being brushed, pampered. Taylor took PeterPan to Char (made in Cole Camp USA pet items, 660-281-2913) for a fitting for a tote bag she can carry PeterPan in over her shoulder, next to her side. He will be able to go everywhere with her, hands free for Taylor. While Peter Pan waits for a fur-ever home he is helping educate young teens about senior pets, how easy they are to care for. Taylor loves telling about rescue pets that are wonderful in disposition, lost their home through no fault of their own. 06-14 A stop en route home by Split Rail Country Market east of Cole Camp, Peter Pan got a brand new Lupine leash, lifetime guarantee if he should damage it. 07-12 PeterPan is doing splendidly with foster care by Taylor. She carries him everywhere she goes. His tail wags when she calls his name. She is doing a terrific job, also telling her teen-age peers about senior pets. He has fattened up, is now being toted about in a new bag made in Cole Camp USA by Char. (Pic of PeterPan in his tote bag with Taylor) 09-06 PeterPan & Taylor came to visit, get more eye Rx. They arrived with Mary & fur-kids Sir Gus, Boyd, Snickers, Frieda. All have made tremendous progress! PeterPan loves being held, sat most of the time in Taylor's lap. Sir Gus is still quite active, had to explore, "mark" to let the other fur-kids know he was back. Boyd, Snickers & Frieda curled up, dozed off on a pillow on a Kuranda bed. These are all seniors that still enjoy life & living. ++++++++++ This fur-kid is in our Senior Fur-ever & Always Program. Our program is patterned after Love A Golden's Senior Life Program. If you adopt this fur-kid, your original adoption donation is perpetual. You may adopt another appropriate senior (10 years & older) fur-kid from us after this fur-kid passes to the Rainbow Bridge, becoming an Angel Dog. -------------------------------- The adoption fee ranges from $75 to $325. The fee is based upon veterinary care, age & size of dog. The higher adoption fee on the younger small dogs helps care for the older dogs that take longer to find fur-ever homes. Senior citizens and disabled receive a discount. We also offer a discount to those in uniform keeping us safe. Land of the free because of the brave. Our adoption process begins with the e-mail or phone call to us. Please be prepared to furnish your complete name, address, telephone number, your veterinarian contact information & at least two personal references. We will then call you to ask a series of questions.
